Free Maja

Dear listeners, dear anti-fascists,

On June 5, 2025, Maja went on hunger strike in Budapest prison. Maja is reacting to the fact that the decision on the application for transfer to house arrest was postponed the day before and is demanding Maja’s transfer back to Germany.

Maja is an anti-fascist from Jena and was arrested in December 2023 in Berlin. Maja is alleged to have attacked neo-Nazis on the fringes of the neo-Nazi event “Day of Honor” in Hungary in February 2023. In June 2024, Maja was quietly and secretly extradited to Budapest at night. The Federal Constitutional Court later ruled that the extradition was unlawful. This decision has remained without consequences until today, so Maja is still in prison in Budapest.

Maja is exposed to the most adverse prison conditions. These include daily humiliation, malnutrition, physical injuries and solitary confinement. The numerous abuses are listed in Maja’s hunger strike declaration. The biggest problem, however, is solitary confinement. For almost a year, Maja has had almost no contact with other prisoners. The only meaningful human contact is the visits from the lawyer and family, who have to make the long journey from Germany every time. The systematic deprivation of human contact is a form of white torture, i.e. torture that leaves no physical but enormous psychological traces.

This must come to an end, which is why Maja went on hunger strike.

For these reasons, Maja should never have been extradited to Hungary.

In her hunger strike declaration, Maja therefore also shows solidarity with the other accused anti-fascists and declares that no one else should be extradited to Hungary.

Amnesty International and the European Court of Human Rights, among others, have criticized that judicial independence in Hungary is being increasingly restricted.

Maja also is subjected to a show trial in which Maja faces up to 24 years in prison – for alleged involvement in physical injury!

And yet Maja was extradited. For the German authorities, this means that deterrence apparently takes precedence over legal justice.

Maja is a queer, non-binary person, which makes worse the danger of being imprisoned in a queer-phobic country.

The situation for queer people in Hungary is extremely critical and their rights are constantly being restricted. For example, a law has been passed that allows homosexual couples to be reported anonymously to the authorities on the basis of their sexual orientation. Hungary also recently amended its constitution so that a person can only be defined as a man or a woman. The state has thus banned queer people and taken away Maja’s own identity. Another reason to bring Maja back to Germany immediately.

A hunger strike is the last resort for prisoners. After just few weeks, hunger strikers can suffer long-term damage to their health and disabilities, ultimately putting their lives at risk. The next days and weeks are crucial for Maja’s life, health, dignity and freedom. We also know that a hunger strike is only as successful as there is support from outside. That is why we are calling on everyone to Support Maja! Talk to politicians, talk to your fellow human beings, colleagues, relatives and friends, contact the German Foreign Office and the Hungarian Embassy, donate to the extremely expensive Budapest procedure, organize publicity and actions. Each and every one of us can contribute something.

You can find more information on the website basc.news. In addition to the donation account, provides daily updates on Maja’s hunger strike and materials such as posters so that you can take action yourself.
